How to Make New Website for Under $100.00

WebsiteIt amazes me how many small businesses still don’t have a website. A website is an affordable resource that can save you time and make you money. Read on to learn how to make a new website for under $100.00 and why you should start today.

How a website can save you time.

You will save time by adding all of the information that people call and ask you about on a daily basis.

What are your hours?

Where are you located?

Do you have this or do you offer this service?

Pay attention to all the questions that your customers ask and answer them on your website. Many people will look online first for the basics and then call or stop by for what they really need. This will save you time from answering the phone and let you concentrate on more important things like customers and products.

How a website can save and make you money.

More and more people are searching for products and services online instead of using the yellow page directories. If you have a website and your competition doesn’t (which is very likely for small businesses) you will get those customers.

A website can save you money when it comes to retaining your customers. By collecting your customer’s email addresses at your place of business and on your website you can keep in-touch with them for far less money than traditional mailings. By sending out an eNewsletter you can keep your customers informed of new products or services, and offer them discounts to keep them coming back. It’s a great way to advertise to people who already know and like you for very little cost and an easy way to increase your sales.

Other ways to make money on your website are:

  • Affiliate Programs
  • PPC Ads
  • Banner Ads
  • Drop Shipping
  • Direct Sales

If and when you are ready to monetize your website you can read more about each of these methods on our website. But for now download your free copy of how to make a new website for Under $100.00 today.

Making a Favicon

Making a favicon icon for your website is easy and makes your website/blog look more professional. Here is a snapshot of the SKO website’s favicon which I created using a free online graphic tool and a free online image converter.

Step One:

Create a simplified version of your business logo or some other image that will help brand your website. Make the image size 32 pixels x 32 pixels in size. You can use any graphic software program that you have. Save the file as a transparent ping for best results. Make sure you name it favicon. So if you save the file as a ping format it would be called favicon.png.

If you don’t have a good graphic software program you can use this one I found online at Pixlr.com. It’s free to use and without registering, signing up or downloading anything.

Step Two:

Now that you have your graphic image you will need to convert the file to an .ico file format. There are many websites that provide a free graphic converter tool online. Just search the web for the term “free icon converter online” and follow their instructions. It’s usually as simple as; upload your file, select the file format you desire – in this case the .ico format – and hit the submit button.

Step Three:

Upload your favicon.ico file to your web sever and place it in your root directory. If you are using a blog template it may be located in an image folder, check your support website for information on where the file is located.

And that’s it. Your website should now display your new logo icon in the browser bar. If you don’t see it right away, try refreshing your browser a few times.

Free Design Videos

Lynda.com is a fantastic website that offers video lessons for just about all the major design and software program out there like Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Fireworks, Flash, InDesign and Dreamweaver. They also have lessons in graphic design principles as well as color and typography.

I learned about the site during one of my web design classes, we actually used one of the Lynda books as a class reference. Whenever I get a new piece of software or I need to learn some extra coding I’ll sign up for a month. When I first purchased the Adobe Creative Design Suite I signed up for a year. With that many new programs I knew I wanted to be able to learn at my own pace without feeling rushed.

As a special offer Lynda.com is providing SKO visitors a Free 24 Hour Pass. You can use this time to view and evaluate the designing software and to check out the design tutorials.

Adobe Illustrator

Adobe WebsiteAdobe Illustrator is by far the favorite software for professional logo designers. When I first started my business, I used CorelDraw and I really liked it. I found it easy to use and I really didn’t have any complaints except one. Most printers preferred the Illustrator file format and quite a few didn’t even accept the Corel format. Of course I was able to convert the files to .eps but even still their always seemed to be some type of problem producing my projects. Once I switched over to Adobe Illustrator life was just a little bit better.

Here is a partial screen shot of  Illustrator’s interface.

On the left side of the screen the type tool has been expanded to display the various type options. Basically you can make your type plain, in a paragraph, set to a curve, or vertical. And this is only one tool. When you use the pen tool in conjunction with fonts you can shape your type any way you choose and completely customize your logo.

In the example below you can see the vector points in blue. The leaf has been added to the H to make a unique logo type for the Hush Intimate Apparel logo.

Adobe Illustrator is a very powerful logo design software and can take some time to learn. There are some videos available on the Adobe website to help you get started. I also like Lynda.com for an easy way to get up and running on new software programs. Below is a Free 24 Hour Pass that you can sign up for and see if Adobe Illustrator is right for you.

I know Illustrator is expensive, especially if you are just getting your business up and running. The standalone version runs around $600 US. That’s why I also recommend the Logo Design Studio Pro software by SummitSoft. It’s also a vector based software program but it’s much easier to learn and a lot more affordable. However, if you are planning on producing your own marketing materials, you owe it to yourself to at least check out both software options and decide which one will work best for you.
